In anticipation of extreme heat this week and its impact on health and safety in schools, Menands School will have half days for grades PreK-8 on Tuesday, June 18, and Thursday, June 20. Schools are closed on Wednesday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth and there is already a half day scheduled for Friday, June 21.
The current weather forecast shows temperatures in the mid-to high-90s and as high as 97 degrees on some days between Tuesday and Friday. Heat indices or the “real feel” temperature is expected to be well above 100 degrees on both Tuesday and Thursday which has prompted a Heat Advisory.
While we recognize that it can be difficult for families to adjust schedules, the safety of our students and staff is always our top priority. Dismissing early on these days will allow students to get home before the temperatures rise to their highest points and for staff to work in air-conditioned spaces. In temperatures like these, classrooms can become unsafe and the potential for heat-related illnesses including heat exhaustion and heat stroke increases.
Dismissal Time:
PreK-Grade 8: 11:20 AM
Arrangements have been made so that students can take their Regents Exams in air-conditioned spaces.
Food Services:
Breakfast will be served in all schools on Tuesday (6/18) and Thursday (6/20). Grab and Go lunch will be provided to those students who would like it.
CYC:
- CYC after-school care has been canceled for Tuesday (6/18) and Thursday (6/20).
- CYC after-school care will be available for the half-days that were pre-planned on our calendar – Friday 6/21, Monday 6/24, and Tuesday 6/25
