Fire Department Activity on May 22nd

Please see the (letter) from the Superintendent regarding events that occurred on the afternoon of May 22nd that resulted in fire and police response.  Also see the (information) that was distributed to parents at the Safety Forum held earlier this month, on May 10th.  A copy of the letter and brochure is being sent home to all families via U.S. mail.


NYS Science Performance Test & Written Exam

The 2018 NYS Science Performance Test & Written Exam will be administered during the morning hours on the following days:


  • 8th Grade Science Performance Test - 5/23

  • 4th Grade Science Performance Test - 5/30

  • Grades 4 & 8 Science Written Exam - 6/4


Please make sure your child is well rested and arrives to school on time at 8:10 a.m.


Sandra G. Morley P.E. Student Leadership Award Winners

On Monday, May 7th, eight students from Menands School were honored at the Sandra G. Morley Physical Education Leadership Awards Ceremony hosted by Hudson Valley Community College.  More than 600 elementary and middle school students from the Capital Region were in attendance and honored at the ceremony. 


This award is given to students who display outstanding character, citizenship, sportsmanship, leadership and excellence in Physical Education. Congratulations to all!!!!


Menands School Spirit A - Z Days

Congratulations Mr. Masline!                             

School Board President Jeff Masline received CASDA's 2018 Excellence in School Board Service Award at the organization's Annual Dinner held Wednesday, April 18. 

Each year the Capital Area School Development Association recognizes excellence of select individuals for exemplary service to their school district and school community.  Jeff Masline has served on the board of the Menands Union Free School District for 10 years, and as president for the past 7.  Jeff was recognized with the 2018 Excellence in School Board Service Award for his committment to our school community and his leadership as board president.  The tremendous turnout of faculty and staff at the awards dinner was a testament to the work that Jeff does in this volunteer role; truly a well-deserved recognition worthy of being celebrated.


Letter from the Superintendent

On Wednesday, April 18th it came to the attention of the administration that a student was in possession of an unloaded BB gun.  Immediate action was taken and at no time were students or staff in harm's way.  Please see the attached letter that was sent home to all families.

Menands Students Receive Recognition

Students at Menands School received recognition and were awarded for their participation and placement at the Watervliet Lodge Elks #1500.  Six students placed at the district level for the Drug Awareness Poster Competition.  The work of three students received first place.  Their artwork will be forwarded to the State level of competition during the month of May.




Personal Registration will be on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the main lobby of the Menands School. 

District residents registered with the County Board of Elections and who have voted once in the last four years need not register on May 9. 


A Public Hearing on the proposed 2018-2019 Budget for the Menands Union Free School District and the Menands Public Library shall be held at the Menands School on Monday, May 7, 2018, at 6:30 p.m.  The budgets will be available for review on April 30, 2018 at the Menands School Central Office.


The annual meeting of the qualified voters of the Menands Union Free School District, Village of Menands, will be held on Tuesday,

May 15, 2018 between the hours of 12:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. in the Menands School, at which time the polls will be opened to vote by voting machine on the following items:


1.  To adopt the annual budget of the Menands UFSD

2.  To elect one members of the Board of Education.  A five (5) year term commencing on July 1, 2018 and expiring on June 30, 2023

3.  To adopt the annual budget of the Menands Public Library


4.  To elect one Library Board of Trustees member to a 5-year term


Nominating petitions for the Board of Education and Library Board of Trustees seats may be obtained from the District Clerk at Menands School.  Completed petitions are due by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 16, 2018.


Applications for absentee ballots will be obtainable between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday from the District Clerk at Menands School.  Completed applications for absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk at least 7 days prior to the vote if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter.  Absentee ballots must be received by the District Clerk not later than 4:00 p.m. on May 15, 2018.

Menands School Kindergarten Registration

If you are a resident of the Menands union Free School District and have a child who will be 5 years old on or before December 1, 2018, please call Menands School at 518-465-4561 to register for the upcoming year.  There will be a Kindergarten Parent Information Night for parents only held at Menands School on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 6:00p.m. in the library.  If you know a neighbor who has an age-eligible Kindergarten student, please pass the word. 


Parents as Partners Series:

The Menands School in collaboration with the Menands School PTA is launching a series of parent and staff sessions to discuss key issues.  The first forum titled Working with Families: Meeting Standards and Assessments with Success was held on Wednesday March 14th.  Please stay tuned for further updates as they come.


CASDA Friends of Education Award Recipient

Mrs. Waldron, one of the teachers here at Menands School was honored with the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA) Friends of Education Award on Thursday, February 15th at the Friends Of Education Dinner.  CASDA presents this award to recognize the selfless contributions of individuals who dedicate themselves to serving the students and the school community.

In smaller school districts such as Menands, educators are often called upon to make a variety of contributions that go far beyond what is outlined in their job description.  Mrs. Waldron has embraced this charge for 21 years as both a special education teacher and a tireless champion for students.  She serves as a dedicated member of the Arts & Education Committee, working to organize events such as the Annual Author Visit and Literacy Night.  She has coached soccer and contributed to Drama Club productions.  Mrs. Waldron has demonstrated a deep committment to both students and her colleagues with a generosity that embodies the spirit of a Friend of Education.  Congratulations on this well deserved recognotion.


Recess Increase K-5

In response to feedback from parents and families, Menands teachers and administration worked collaboratively to make changes to the schedule to increase recess at grades K-5 to prior year levels.  The new schedule will take effect Monday, February 5th.  A copy of the letter that was mailed home to parents can be viewed (here).


3rd Annual Yusef Westerman Talent Show

Due to unforseen circumstances and time constraints, the 3rd Annual Yusef Westerman Talent Show has been postponed until Friday, April 20th.  A new rehearsal schedule will be sent home closer to the new date and time.  Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Emergency Closing Information


In accordance with District policy #8134, Emergency Closing decisions are made in consideration of the fundamental concern for safety, health, and wellness of children.  Among the factors taken into consideration is windchill.  In that regard, the District utilizes the guidance provided from the New York State Center for School Health. 

Any decisions to close or delay are made as early as possible and publicized on the school web page, via local media outlets, and using the Everbridge Notification System.


Executive Order Does Not Allow for Prepayment of 2018 School Property Taxes

The recent Executive Order signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo allowing for the early payment of New York State taxes to assist in federal tax write-offs does not apply to 2018-19 school property taxes. Read more about this Executive Order

It is our great pleasure to share with you that it was reported by the Times Union that Menands School was rated as #4 in the ranking of the 2018 Best Public Middle Schools in the Albany Area.  The information was compiled by Niche, and according to their webpage, "is based on a rigorous analysis of key statistics...ranking factors include state test scores, student-teacher ratio, student diversity, teacher quality, middle school ratings, and overall quality of the school district."  In a similar ranking, also by Niche we were recognized among the top elementary schools at #6.
